Eastgate Centre masterpiece of biomimicry architecture
The Eastgate Centre in Harare, Zimbabwe is a nine-storey shopping and office complex widely celebrated as a pioneering masterpiece of biomimicry and sustainable architecture. Completed in 1996, the building was designed by architect Mick Pearce in collaboration with engineering firm Arup. It gained international fame for completely eliminating the need for energy-intensive conventional air conditioning, operating instead on natural climate-control principles.
๐ The Termite Mound Inspiration
The building’s cooling system is modeled directly after the ingenious ventilation systems of African termite mounds. Termites maintain a steady internal temperature within their nests despite scorching external heat by constantly opening and closing a network of heating and cooling vents.
Eastgate Centre replicates this mechanism using a passive cooling system:ย
- Thermal Mass: The building is constructed with massive concrete and brick walls that slowly absorb heat during the day, keeping the interior cool.
- The Stack Effect: Low-priority fans pull outside air into the basement, where it is channeled upward through internal pipes and tunnels. As the air warms inside the building, it naturally rises and vents through 48 distinctive brick chimneys on the roof.
- Night Purge: At night, the thick walls release their trapped heat, and the continuous airflow flushes out warm air, cooling the structural mass down ahead of the next day.
This design allows the Eastgate Centre to use 90% less energy for climate control than standard commercial complexes of similar size, making it a benchmark for eco-friendly architectural design globally.ย
๐๏ธ Layout & Use
Located in the heart of Harare’s central business district at Robert Mugabe Avenue and Second Street, the complex consists of two parallel buildings linked by an open-air atrium under a glass canopy.ย
- Retail Space: Spans 5,600 mยฒ across the lower levels, housing major brands (such as Econet, Jet, and Edgars), local boutiques, cafes, and traditional eateries serving dishes like sadza.
- Office Space: Offers 26,000 mยฒ of corporate offices spread across seven floors.ย
- Amenities: Includes pedestrian bridges, open-air skywalks suspended by cables, vertical gardens, and a secure parking lot accommodating up to 450 cars.
